The Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month is celebrated as Bahula Chauth or Bahula Chaturthi. This year it is falling on 15th August. This is the festival of cow worship. Daughter-in-law women observe this fast. This fast is to protect the son, give birth to the child and increase the opulence. Cow's milk or anything made from it should not be consumed on this day. After fasting during the day, cow and calf should be worshiped in the evening and offered to them. In the end, the story of Bahula Chauth should be heard.

In Dwapar Yuga, when Lord Shri Hari incarnated as Shri Krishna and performed pastimes in Braj, many gods also became his gop-gwal-like companions from their respective parts. Goshikaramani Kamdhenu also originated from his share and started beautifying him by becoming a cow in Nand Baba's cowshed by the name of Bahula. Shri Krishna had an innate affection for him and for Shri Krishna. Seeing Balakrishna, Bahula's breasts would seep out of milk, and seeing her motherhood, Shri Krishna would also drink nectar-like drink from her lips like lotus petals on her breasts.
Once, green grass was grazing in the Bahula forest. Shri Krishna knew the Leela. He took the form of a lion from Maya. Frightened Bahula started trembling. He said to Singh in Deenwani, O Vanraj! I haven't milked my calf yet. He will be waiting for me. So let me go, I will come to you after feeding me, then eat me. Singh said, what is the belief of the creature to come back after leaving the trapped creature in the death trap! When Bahula, who was helpless, took the oath of truth and religion, Singh left him. Bahula went to the cowshed and fed the waiting calf and returned to the lion to protect her truth. Seeing him, Shri Krishna, who became a lion, appeared and said, Bahule! This was your test, you stood firm in your true religion, so due to its effect you will be worshiped from house to house and you will be called by the name of Gaumata. Bahula returned to her home and started living happily with her Vats.

भाद्रपद मास के कृष्णपक्ष की चतुर्थी को बहुला चौथ या बहुला चतुर्थी मनायी जाती है। इस वर्ष यह 15 अगस्त को पड़ रही है। यह गौ पूजा का पर्व है। इस व्रत को पुत्रवती स्त्रियाँ करती हैं। यह व्रत पुत्र की रक्षा करने वाला, सन्तान देने वाला तथा ऐश्वर्य को बढ़ाने वाला है। इस दिन गाय के दूध अथवा उससे बनने वाली किसी भी वस्तु का सेवन नहीं करना चाहिए। दिन में उपवास करके सायंकाल में गाय और बछड़े की पूजा करनी चाहिए और उसे भोग लगाना चाहिए। अन्त में बहुला चौथ की कथा सुननी चाहिए।
व्रत-कथा
द्वापर युग में जब भगवान् श्रीहरि ने श्रीकृष्ण रूप में अवतार लेकर ब्रज में लीलाएँ कीं, तो अनेक देवता भी अपने-अपने अंशों से उनके गोप-ग्वालरूपी परिकर बने। गोशिकरामणि कामधेनु भी अपने अंश से उत्पन्न हो बहुला नाम से नन्दबाबा की गौशाला में गाय बनकर उसकी शोभा बढ़ाने लगी। श्रीकृष्ण का उससे और उसका श्रीकृष्ण से सहज स्नेह था। बालकृष्ण को देखते ही बहुला के स्तनों से दुग्धधारा फूट पड़ती और श्रीकृष्ण भी उसे मातृभाव को देख उसके स्तनों में कमलपँखुड़ियों सदृश अपने होठों को लगा अमृतसदृश पय का पान करते।
एक बार बहुला वन में हरी-हरी घास चर रही थी। श्रीकृष्ण को लीला सूझी। उन्होंने माया से सिंह का रूप धारण कर लिया। भयभीत बहुला थर-थर काँपने लगी। उसने दीनवाणी में सिंह से कहा, हे वनराज! मैंने अभी अपने बछड़े को दूध नहीं पिलाया है। वह मेरी प्रतीक्षा कर रहा होगा। अतः मुझे जाने दो, मैं दूध पिलाकर तुम्हारे पास आ जाऊँगी, तब मुझे खा लेना। सिंह ने कहा, मृत्युपाश में फँसे जीव को छोड़ देने पर उसके पुनः वापस लौटकर आने का क्या विश्वास! निरुपाय हो बहुला ने जब सत्य और धर्म की शपथ ली, तब सिंह ने उसे छोड़ दिया। बहुला ने गौशाला में जाकर प्रतीक्षारत बछड़े को दूध पिलाया और अपने सत्यधर्म की रक्षा के लिये सिंह के पास वापस लौट आयी। उसे देखकर सिंह बने श्रीकृष्ण प्रकट हो गए और बोले, बहुले! यह तेरी परीक्षा थी, तू अपने सत्यधर्म पर दृढ़ रही, अतः इसके प्रभाव से घर-घर तेरा पूजन होगा और तू गौमाता के नाम से पुकारी जाएगी। बहुला अपने घर लौट आयी और अपने वत्स के साथ आनन्द से रहने लगी।
