Three Day Chhath Puja
(October 29-31, 2022)

Suryashthi is mainly the fast of Lord Surya. This fast is most popular in Bihar. Lord Surya is worshiped in this fast. In this fast, Arghya is offered to the setting and rising sun and it is worshipped. There is a law to eat this fast by asking for prasad. According to Skanda Purana, one should take one meal on Kartik Shukla Panchami, and then on the day of Shashthi, take a vow of fasting in the morning and stay fast for the whole day. Speech should be restrained. Then by going to the bank of a river, Lord Surya should be worshiped with fruits, flowers, ghee, ripe naivedya, incense, lamp etc. Rakta sandalwood and Rakta flower should be specially kept in the worship of Lord Surya. In the end, after taking pure water in a copper vessel, pouring roli, flowers, and Akshat should be offered to Lord Surya with that water.
Specially made 'Thekua' consisting of flour and jaggery during the fasting of Suryashthi. The wheel of Lord Surya's chariot is inscribed on Thekua with a wooden mould. Along with the Sun God, Mata Shashthi is also worshiped on this day. She is worshiped by making an idol of Shashti Devi. They are immersed after the Udayagami Arghya. It is believed that Mata Shashthi arrives in the house from the evening of Panchami. The fast of Suryashthi is observed for the fulfillment of other wishes as well as for the son's wish.
Fasting Story
An old lady had no children. On the day of Kartik Shukla Saptami, she resolved that if she had a son, she would fast. By the grace of Lord Surya, she had a daughter-in-law, but she did not fast. The boy got married. While returning from marriage, the bride and groom camped in a forest. Then the bride found her husband dead in the palanquin there. She started moaning. Hearing his lament, an old lady came to him and said, "I am Chhath Mata. Your mother-in-law has always been wooing me. He did not worship me and fast even after making a resolution, but seeing your lament, I bring your husband alive. Go home and talk to your mother-in-law about this.” The groom came alive. The bride went home and told all the talks with the mother-in-law. Mother-in-law accepted the mistake and from that day onwards started fasting for Suryashti.

त्रिदिवसीय छठ व्रत

सूर्यषष्ठी प्रमुख रूप से भगवान् सूर्य का व्रत है। यह व्रत बिहार में सर्वाधिक प्रचलित है। इस व्रत में भगवान् सूर्य की पूजा की जाती है। इस व्रत में अस्तगामी एवं उदयगामी सूर्य को अर्घ्य दिया जाता है और उसकी पूजा की जाती है। इस व्रत का प्रसाद माँगकर खाने का विधान है। स्कन्दपुराण के अनुसार कार्तिक शुक्ल पंचमी को एक बार भोजन करना चाहिए, तदुपरान्त षष्ठी के दिन प्रातःकाल व्रत का संकल्प लेते हुए पूरे दिन निराहार रहना चाहिए। वाक् संयम रखना चाहिए। िफर किसी नदी के किनारे जाकर फल, पुष्प, घृत पक्व नैवेद्य, धूप, दीप आदि से भगवान् सूर्य का पूजन करना चाहिए। रक्त चन्दन और रक्त पुष्प भगवान् सूर्य की पूूजा में विशेष रूप से रखने चाहिए। अन्त में ताम्रपात्र में शुद्ध जल लेकर उसमें रोली, पुष्प, अक्षत डालकर उस जल से भगवान् सूर्य को अर्घ्य देना चाहिए।
सूर्यषष्ठी के व्रत में आटे और गुड़ से युक्त ‘ठेकुआ’ विशेष रूप से बनाए जाते हैं। ठेकुआ पर लकड़ी के साँचे से भगवान् सूर्य के रथ के चक्र को अंकित किया जाता है। सूर्य भगवान् के साथ-साथ इस दिन माता षष्ठी की भी पूजा की जाती है। षष्ठी देवी की प्रतिमा बनाकर उसका पूजन किया जाता है। उदयगामी अर्घ्य के पश्चात् उनका विसर्जन किया जाता है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि पंचमी के सायंकाल से ही घर में माता षष्ठी का आगमन हो जाता है। सूर्यषष्ठी का व्रत अन्य मनोकामनाओं की पूर्ति के साथ-साथ पुत्र कामना के लिए भी किया जाता है। 
व्रत-कथा
एक वृद्धा के कोई सन्तान नहीं थी। कार्तिक शुक्ल सप्तमी के दिन उसने संकल्प किया कि यदि उसके पुत्र होगा तो वह व्रत करेगी। सूर्य भगवान् की कृपा से वह पुत्रवती तो हुई, पर उसने व्रत नहीं किया। लड़के का विवाह हो गया। विवाह से लौटते समय वर-वधू ने एक जंगल में डेरा डाल लिया। तब वधू ने वहाँ पालकी में अपने पति को मरा पाया। वह विलाप करने लगी। उसका विलाप सुनकर एक वृद्धा उसके पास आकर बोली, “मैं छठ माता हूँ। तुम्हारी सास सदैव मुझे फुुसलाती रही है। उसने संकल्प करके भी मेरी पूजा एवं व्रत नहीं किया, किन्तु तुम्हारा विलाप देखकर मैं तुम्हारे पति को जीवित कर देती हूँ। घर जाकर अपनी सास से इस विषय में बात करना।” वर जीवित हो उठा। वधू ने घर जाकर सास से सारी वार्ता कही। सास ने भूल स्वीकार कर ली और उस दिन के बाद से सूर्यषष्ठी का व्रत करने लगी।
