Goganavami is celebrated in the memory of the famous folk deity of Rajasthan, Gogaji. Revered as 'Incarnation of Nagraj' among Hindus and 'Gogapir' among Muslims, Gogaji is the first among the medieval folk deities of Rajasthan. Gogaji was also known as 'Jahir Pir'. Their time is considered to be the first half of the 11th century. Gogaji Chauhan was a Rajput. Gogaji was having a fight with his cousin Arjan-Surjan over land and property. Once Arjan-Surjan attacked with the Muslim army and surrounded their cows. Gogaji retaliated with great valor. In this war, Gogaji, Arjan-Surjan and many people on both sides were killed. Gogaji is worshiped as both a cavalry warrior and a snake deity. Gogamedi (Hanumangarh) is the main place of worship of Gogaji.

गोगानवमी राजस्थान के प्रसिद्ध लोकदेवता गोगाजी की स्मृति में मनाया जाता है। हिन्दुओं में ‘नागराज का अवतार’ तथा मुसलमानों में ‘गोगापीर’ के रूप में पूज्य गोगाजी राजस्थान के मध्ययुगीन लोकदेवताओं में प्रथम हैं। गोगाजी को ‘जाहिर पीर’ भी कहा जाता था। इनका समय 11वीं सदी का पूर्वार्द्ध माना जाता है। गोगाजी चौहान राजपूत थे। गोगाजी का अपने मौसेरे भाई अरजन-सुर्जन से जमीन-जायदाद को लेकर झगड़ा चल रहा था। एक बार अरजन-सुर्जन ने मुस्लिम फौज को साथ लेकर आक्रमण कर दिया तथा उनकी गायों को घेर लिया। गोगाजी ने बड़ी वीरता से प्रत्याक्रमण किया। इस युद्ध में गोगाजी, अरजन-सुर्जन तथा दोनों ओर के कई व्यक्ति मारे गए। गोगाजी की पूजा अश्वारोही योद्धा तथा सर्प देवता दोनों ही रूपों में की जाती है। गोगामेड़ी (हनुमानगढ़) गोगाजी का प्रमुख पूजास्थल है।
