Mahaganpati Chaturthi

On Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, the august deity Lord Ganesha was born at midday. On this occasion, Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi is celebrated every year as Ganesh Chaturthi. Lord Ganesha is both a disruptor and a destroyer of obstacles. While he is the destroyer of obstacles for the seekers, he is also the destroyer of obstacles for the wicked.
Ganesha is the god of wisdom. Riddhi and Siddhi are his religious wives. In this way, by worshiping Lord Ganesha, where one gets success in work, obstacles are removed, there is an increase in knowledge and intellect and opulence is attained. On Ganesh Chaturthi, vermilion should be offered to the idol of Lord Ganesha and laddus should be offered to him. In Maharashtra, the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great pomp. Due to the efforts of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, this festival has taken the form of Janotsav.
Sadhak should fast on Ganesh Chaturthi. In the afternoon, after offering vermilion on the idol of Ganesha, worship it according to law and offer laddus in Naivedya. After that, Ganesha aarti should be performed with conch shell, bell and gharial. After taking bath again in the evening, the seeker should worship Ganesha again. Thereafter the Brahmin should be fed. Only after this work he should take food himself. The moon should not be seen on this day. The following story should also be heard on Ganesh Chaturthi:

Once upon a time, when Lord Shiva and Parvati were traveling on the banks of river Narmada, Parvati ji had a desire to play chaupad with Lord Shiva. Parvati presented her wish to the Lord, then Shiva said, O Goddess! Who will be the witness of our victory and defeat here? On this Parvati made a statue out of grass straws and sanctified life in it and said to the statue, 'O son! Today we are playing quadruped, but there is no witness to our defeat and victory, so at the end of the game, you will be a witness to our defeat and victory and tell who among us won and who lost?'
In this way, after some time, the game of Chaupad started between Lord Shiva and Parvati, and in this game only Parvati won all three times. When at the end of the game, the son of the idol made the decision of victory and defeat, then the son declared Lord Shiva victorious. On this Parvati became angry with the child and cursed that he should remain crippled with one leg and lie in the mud and suffer his sins.
On this the child humbly said 'O mother! I did not do this due to any deviousness and malice, but all this has happened due to ignorance, so please forgive me and suggest some way to get rid of your curse.' Mother Parvati felt pity on hearing the child's compassionate words and said 'Once upon a time. Here snake-girls will come to worship Ganesha, with them you will attain me by fasting Ganesha.' The child systematically observed Ganesha's fast for 21 days.
Pleased with the child's fast, Lord Ganesha granted a boon that 'O child! I am happy with you, ask for your desired groom.' On this the child said 'O Lord! Give so much strength to my feet that I can meet my parents on Mount Kailas and my parents may be pleased with me.' Lord Ganesha granted the boy the boon of wish fulfillment. In no time the boy's feet came in the right condition and the boy left for Kailas mountain from there. Reaching Kailasa, he bowed at the feet of Lord Shiva and narrated the whole method of his spiritual practice to Lord Shiva. Incidentally, on the same day Mother Parvati also got angry with Lord Shiva.
On this Lord Shiva also fasted and worshiped Lord Ganesha for 21 days. Due to the effect of his sadhana, Parvatiji's love for Lord Shiva was awakened again and soon she came close to Lord Shiva. Parvatiji asked Lord Shiva, 'What is the remedy you have taken, as a result of which I have come to you in part.' On this Lord Shiva said, 'O Goddess! To please you, I did a Ganesha fast.'
In this way, Shiva revealed the entire method of Ganesha fast to Parvati. After this, Parvatiji also observed Ganesha fast for 21 days with the desire to meet her son Kartikeya and worshiped Ganesha with Durva, flowers and laddus every day. Due to the effect of this fast, Kartikeya himself met Parvati on the 21st day itself. He also fasted after listening to the significance of Ganesha's fast from the mouth of his mother. Kartikeya ji told this fast to Vishwamitraji. Vishwamitraji also became 'Brahma Rishi' due to the effect of this fast.

महागणपति चतुर्थी व्रत

भाद्रपद शुक्ल चतुर्थी को अग्रपूज्य देव भगवान् गणेश का मध्याह्न में जन्म हुआ था। इसी उपलक्ष्य में भाद्रपद शुक्ल चतुर्थी को प्रतिवर्ष गणेशचतुर्थी के रूप में मनाया जाता है। भगवान् गणेश विघ्नहर्ता एवं विघ्नकर्ता दोनों हैं। जहाँ साधकों के लिए वे विघ्न विनाशक हैं, वहीं दुष्टों के लिए विघ्नकर्ता भी हैं। 
गणेशजी बुद्धि के देवता हैं। ॠद्धि और सिद्धि इनकी धर्म पत्नियाँ हैं। इस प्रकार भगवान् गणेश की उपासना से जहाँ कार्यों में सफलता मिलती है, अवरोध हटते हैं, वहीं ज्ञान एवं बुद्धि में वृद्धि होती है तथा ऐश्वर्य की प्राप्ति होती है। गणेशचतुर्थी पर भगवान् गणेश की प्रतिमा पर सिन्दूर चढ़ाना चाहिए और उन्हें लड्डुओं का भोग लगाना चाहिए। महाराष्ट्र में गणेशचतुर्थी का पर्व बड़े धूम-धाम से मनाया जाता है। बालगंगाधर तिलक के प्रयासों से यह पर्व जनोत्सव का रूप ले चुका है।
गणेशचतुर्थी पर साधक को उपवास करना चाहिए। दोपहर में गणेशजी की प्रतिमा पर सिन्दूर चढ़ाकर विधि-विधान से उसकी पूजा करनी चाहिए तथा नैवेद्य में लड्डुओं का भोग लगाना चाहिए। तदुपरान्त शंख, घण्टा, घड़ियाल के साथ गणेशजी की आरती करनी चाहिए। सायंकाल पुनः स्नान करने के उपरान्त साधक को गणेशजी की पूजा पुनः करनी चाहिए। तदुपरान्त ब्राह्मण को भोजन करवाना चाहिए। इस कार्य के उपरान्त ही उसे स्वयं भोजन ग्रहण करना चाहिए। इस दिन चन्द्रमा को नहीं देखना चाहिए। गणेशचतुर्थी पर निम्नलिखित कथा का श्रवण भी करना चाहिए :
व्रतकथा
एक समय की बात है जब भगवान् शिव एवं पार्वती नर्मदा नदी के तट पर भ्रमण कर रहे थे, तब पार्वतीजी की इच्छा हुई कि वे भगवान् शिव के साथ चौपड़ खेलें।  पार्वतीजी ने अपनी इच्छा को भगवान् के समक्ष प्रस्तुत किया, तब शिवजी बोले हे देवी! यहाँ हमारी हार-जीत का साक्षी कौन होगा? इस पर पार्वतीजी ने घास के तिनकों से एक प्रतिमा का निर्माण किया और उसमें प्राण-प्रतिष्ठा कर दी और प्रतिमा से कहा ‘हे पुत्र! आज हम चौपड़ खेल रहे हैं, किन्तु हमारी हार-जीत का कोई साक्षी नहीं है, अतः खेल के अन्त में तुम हमारी हार-जीत का साक्षी होकर बताना कि हममें से कौन जीता और कौन हारा?’
इस प्रकार कुछ समय पश्चात् भगवान् शिव और पार्वतीजी में चौपड़ का खेल आरम्भ हुआ और इस खेल में तीनों ही बार पार्वतीजी ही जीतीं। जब खेल के अन्त में प्रतिमा रूपी पुत्र से हार-जीत का निर्णय करवाया, तब पुत्र ने भगवान् शिव को विजयी बताया। इस पर पार्वतीजी ने बालक से क्रुद्ध होकर शाप दिया कि वह एक पैर से अपंग होकर कीचड़ में पड़ा रहे और अपने पापों को भोगे। 
इस पर बालक विनम्रतापूर्वक बोला ‘हे माता! मैंने किसी कुटिलता एवं द्वेषवश ऐसा नहीं किया, अपितु यह सब अज्ञानतावश हो गया है, अतः आप मुझे क्षमा करें तथा अपने शाप से मुक्ति का कोई उपाय बताएँ।’ बालक के करुणामयी शब्द सुनकर माता पार्वती को दया आ गई और उन्होंने कहा ‘एक समय यहाँ नाग-कन्याएँ गणेश पूजन करने आएँगी, उनके साथ तुम गणेश व्रत करके मुझे प्राप्त करोगे।’ इसके लगभग एक वर्ष पश्चात् श्रावण मास में नाग कन्याओं ने वहाँ आकर गणेश पूजा की तथा उस बालक को भी गणेश व्रत की विधि बताई। बालक ने विधिपूर्वक 21 दिनों तक गणेशजी का व्रत किया। 
बालक के व्रत से भगवान् गणेश ने प्रसन्न होकर वरदान दिया कि ‘हे बालक! मैं तुमसे प्रसन्न हूँ, अपना वांछित वर माँग।’ इस पर बालक ने कहा ‘हे भगवन्! मेरे पाँव में इतनी शक्ति दो कि मैं कैलास पर्वत पर अपने माता-पिता से मिल सकूँ और मेरे माता-पिता मुझसे प्रसन्न हो जाएँ।’ भगवान् गणेश ने बालक को इच्छापूर्ति का वरदान दे दिया। कुछ ही समय में बालक के पैर सही अवस्था में आ गए और बालक ने वहाँ से कैलास पर्वत के लिए प्रस्थान कर दिया। कैलास पर पहुँचकर भगवान् शिव के चरणों में प्रणाम किया और भगवान् शिव को अपनी साधना की सारी विधि सुनायी। संयोगवश उसी दिन माता पार्वती भी भगवान् शिव से नाराज हो गई थीं। 
इस पर भगवान् शिव ने भी 21 दिन तक भगवान् गणेशजी का व्रत किया एवं पूजा की। उनकी साधना के प्रभाव से पार्वतीजी के मन में पुनः भगवान् शिव के प्रति प्रेम जाग्रत हो गया तथा शीघ्र ही भगवान् शिव के समीप आ गईं। पार्वतीजी ने भगवान् शिव से पूछा कि ‘आपने ऐसा कौन-सा उपाय किया जिसके परिणामस्वरूप मैं आपके पास भागी-भागी आ गई हूँ।’ इस पर भगवान् शिव बोले ‘हे देवी! तुम्हें प्रसन्न करने के लिए मैंने गणेश व्रत किया।’ 
इस प्रकार शिवजी ने गणेश व्रत की सारी विधि पार्वतीजी के समक्ष प्रकट की। इसके पश्चात् पार्वतीजी ने भी अपने पुत्र कार्तिकेय से मिलने की इच्छा से 21 दिन पर्यन्त गणेश व्रत किया तथा प्रतिदिन दूर्वा, पुष्प एवं लड्डुओं से गणेशजी का पूजन किया। इस व्रत के प्रभाव से 21वें दिन ही कार्तिकेय जी स्वयं पार्वतीजी से आ मिले। उन्होंने भी माता के मुख से गणेश व्रत का माहात्म्य सुनकर व्रत किया। कार्तिकेय जी ने यही व्रत विश्वामित्रजी को बताया। विश्वामित्रजी भी इसी व्रत के प्रभाव से ही ‘ब्रह्म ॠषि’ बने।
