Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore is a famous poet, litterateur, philosopher and educationist. He is the first person not only from India but also from Asia, who received the Nobel Prize. This award has been received on his immortal work Gitanjali. The national anthems of India and Bangladesh are the compositions of Gurudev. The national anthem of India 'Jana Gana Mana' and the national anthem of Bangladesh 'Amar Sonar Bangla' are both composed by Rabindranath Tagore. Thus he is the only poet who has written the national anthems of two countries.
Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 07, 1861 in Jodasanko Thakurwadi, Kolkata. His father Devendranath Tagore was a well-known philosopher and social reformer of Bengal. Mother's name was Sharda Devi. He had his early education at St. Xavier's School in Kolkata. He later studied at the Public School in Bridgestone, England and took admission in Law at the University of London, but returned home in 1880 without obtaining a degree. He married Mrinalini Devi in ​​1883. In addition to Gitanjali, Rabindranath Tagore's works include Purabipravini, Shishubholanath, Mahua Vanvani, Parishesh, Punsch, Vithika Sheshalekha, Chokherbali, Kanika, Naivedymayerkhela, Chhinchana, Geetimalaya, Katha-o-Kahani etc. He composed about 2230 songs and composed many of them. That is why Tagore's music cannot be separated from his literature. His music is known as 'Rabindra Sangeet'. He was a writer and musician as well as a playwright and painter. The Shantiniketan institution established by him is a golden contribution in the field of education. He died on 07 August 1941 in Kolkata.
