Shani Jayanti : May 19, 2023
Shani Jayanti is falling on 19th May this month. People who have Saturn in an inauspicious position in their horoscope or those who are suffering from Saturn's half-and-a-half or half-and-a-half years of transit, should chant Shanishchar Mantra on this day and night and recite Stotra, Shanishchar Sahasranamavali, Chalisa, Kavach etc.
In astrology, Saturn has been called the punisher planet. Shani is addressed by many names. They are called 'Saturn' in English, 'Kawan' in Persian and 'Juhal' in Arabic. In the Puranas, he has been described as the son of Surya's wife Chhaya. Yama is his Anuj (younger brother). In the 12th house of astrology, they are considered to be the factors of eighth, tenth and twelfth house. Libra is their high sign, where their best results come. Aries is his debilitated sign, where adverse results have been observed. At the time of birth Saturn gives moderate results when it is situated in Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, opposite for Leo and Scorpio and best results are obtained for Capricorn and Aquarius. History and Puranas bear witness that due to the evil eye of Shani, even kings like Harishchandra, Nal and Ravana had to stumble door-to-door during their transit. In astrology, many ways of Shani Shanti have been told. 
According to the Bhavishya Purana, if the person is suffering from Saturn's Dasha, Sade Sati or Dhaiya's transit or Shani is giving adverse results by sitting in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house in the birth chart, then reading or listening to Pippalad's story without any difficult measures Saturn's malefic effects can be pacified by doing this.
Story :
Once in Treta Yuga there was a severe famine due to lack of rain. Due to that severe famine, Kaushik Muni along with his wife and sons left their place of residence and went to reside in another state as the maintenance of the family became difficult. Due to extreme pains on the way, he left one of his sons on the way. That child alone started crying in agony of hunger and thirst.
He suddenly saw a Peepal tree there. There was also a well near it, the child drank cold water after eating the fruits of Peepal and after finding himself healthy, he started doing hard penance, suddenly one day Devarshi Narad came there, seeing him, the child
Greeted. Kind Narad ji was very pleased to see his condition, modesty and humility and after performing all the rites of the child, made him study the Vedas along with the secret of the hierarchy and also preached the Vaishnava mantra 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Namah'.
Now that child started meditating and chanting mantras of Lord Vishnu everyday. Narad ji also remained there. Satisfied with the tenacity of the child in a short time, Lord Vishnu reached there riding on Garuda. The child recognized him from the words of Devarshi Narad. Then he asked for the boon of strong devotion in God. The Lord, being pleased, gave the child the teachings of knowledge and yoga, and after blessing him with devotion, he disappeared. By the advice of God, that child became a great sage.
One day the child asked Narad ji - ' Maharaj, what is the result of this deed, that I had to suffer so much. at such a young age
Why am I being afflicted by the planets? Nothing is known about my parents where are they? Why am I living in so much pain? Fortunately, you mercifully performed my rites and gave me Brahminhood.' Narad ji said after listening to these words - ' Child. The planet Saturn has caused you a lot of pain. Today the whole country is suffering because of its slow pace. Look at that, the proud Saturn is seen burning in the sky.'
Hearing this, the child got excited like fire with anger. Seeing him with fierce eyes, he dropped Shanischar from the sky to the ground. Shanischar fell on a mountain and broke his leg, which left him crippled. Devarshi Narad was pleased and showed Shanishchar's plight to all the gods. Lord Brahma said to the child:
चरन्वृक्षं शनैरेष शुभाशुभफलप्रदः।
हत साध्या ग्रहाश्चैते न भवन्ति कदाचन्।
बलिहोमनमस्कारैः शान्तिं यच्छन्ति पूजिताः।
अतोऽर्थमस्य दिवसे स्नानमभ्यङ्गपूर्वकम्॥
(उत्तर पर्व 114 / 29 - 30)
Means O Mahabhag! You have done hard penance by eating peepal fruit, so Narad ji has rightly named you "Pippalad'. From today you will get fame in the world by this name. Whoever worships you with devotion on Saturday or pronounces this name 'Pippalad', they will not have to bear the pain of Shani for seven births and they will be blessed with sons and grandsons. Now you establish Saturn in the sky as before, because in reality he has no crime.
To get rid of the pain of the planets, Naivedya request, Havan, Namaskar etc. should be done. Planets should not be disrespected. They give peace when worshipped. Pippalad established Shanischar in his place as per the order of Brahma ji. In Adhyay 114 of Uttar Parva, it has also been said that “The person who listens/reads this Shani lecture with devotion and by making an iron idol of Shani, keeping it in an urn filled with oil and donating it to a Brahmin with devotion, he will never get Shani does not suffer.'
