Shukdev ji is the son of Maharishi Ved Vyas. There are many stories of his birth. According to a legend, once in a cave on Kailas, Parvati ji asked Shiva that "Lord! Tell me a story related to Shri Krishna, because you constantly remember him and think about him. Lord Shiva said, "It is a very secret matter. Look, there is no one else. Parvati ji looked around and said that "yes, there is no one else", but there was a rotten egg of a parrot lying there, which Parvati ji ignored. Before narrating the story, Lord Shiva told Parvati ji that "When I narrate a story, you go on saying yes."
After this Lord Shiva started telling the story of Bhagwat. Till the tenth skandha, Parvati ji kept listening and saying yes, but in the end she fell asleep. After hearing this story, the parrot's egg was alive, seeing Parvati ji in her sleep, she started saying yes and she listened to the whole story. At last Lord Shiva came to know about Parvati's sleep, so he followed Shuka (parrot) who was saying yes. He ran to Maharishi Ved Vyasa's ashram and got absorbed in his mouth. On the return of Mahadev, the same Shuka appeared in the form of Vyasa's son. Shukdev ji had performed the week of Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran in Shuktal near Haridwar to King Parikshit. Since then, the tradition of Shrimad Bhagwat Week Parayan has continued. On the birth anniversary of Shukdev ji, he is worshiped etc. Fasting is observed and the birth anniversary is celebrated. It is important to tell and listen to the story of Bhagwat on this day.
