It is also known as 'Kailas of the South' or 'Dakshin Kashi'. Goddess Gyanprasun Amba is also established here along with Lord Kalahashtishwar. In this temple, three huge gopurams are located at the main gate of the temple of South India, which are unique in terms of architecture. Snake prestige is specially worshiped here.
According to the history of Srikalahasti temple, a spider, snake and elephant worshiped Lord Shiva in the city to attain salvation. The Srikalahasti temple was built during the Pallava period in the fifth century. Some new structures were built at Srikalahasti Temple during the 16th century during the reign of the Chola Empire and the Vijayanagara Dynasty.
This temple is known for worshiping Lord Shiva. Srikalahasti Temple is famous for the element Vayu and the other four Panchatattva which are Chidambaram (Space), Kanchipuram (Earth), Tiruvanikkaval (Water) and Tiruvannamalai (Fire). This temple is one of the few famous and respected religious places in the South. Apart from visiting this holy shrine, Srikalahasti temple also frees the devotees from defects in their planetary positions.
There is an interesting legend about this temple, which states that during the initial stages of the creation of the world, Lord Vayu did penance for thousands of years to please the Karpura Lingam. Lord Shiva, pleased with the devotion of Lord Vayu, granted him three boons, in which the Lord granted him the boon of having a worldwide presence, which is an essential part of every living being on the planet, and gave him the form of Samba Shiva in the form of camphor corporation. Allow name change. These three requests were granted by Lord Shiva and the lingam is worshiped as Samba Shiva or Karpoor Vayulingam.
Another legend states that Goddess Parvati was cursed by Lord Shiva, due to which Lord Shiva had to give up his divine form and assume a human form. Goddess Parvati did penance for many years at Srikalahasti to free herself from the curse. Lord Shiva was very pleased with her devotion and dedication and he recovered Parvati, who is known as Jnana Prasunambika Devi or Shivagyanam Jnana Prasunamba.
According to another legend, Kannappa who was one of the 63 Shiva saints dedicated his life to Lord Shiva. Kannappa willingly offered his eyes to cover the blood flowing from the lingam of Lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he stopped the saint and freed himself from the endless cycle of birth and death.
The Srikalahasti temple is a beautiful illustration of the Dravidian style of architecture, which was built during the Pallava period in the 5th century. The temple complex is situated on a hill. The entrance to the grand temple complex faces south, while the main temple faces west. The white stone Shivalingam in this shrine resembles the shape of an elephant's trunk.
