Vat Savitri Vrat : May 17-19, 2023

Vat Savitri Vrat : May 17-19, 2023
Vatsavitri fast is observed on Jyestha Krishna Amavasya. Banyan tree is worshiped in this. Women observe this fast for unbroken good fortune. A three-day fast is observed in this fast. This fast is observed from Jyestha Krishna Trayodashi to Amavasya. In some places Vatsavitri Vrat is observed for one day i.e. Jyestha Krishna Amavasya only. This fast is kept by Savitri as a memory of bringing her husband back to life. The banyan tree is considered a god tree. Lord Brahma is believed to reside in the roots of the banyan tree, Lord Vishnu in the stem and Lord Shiva in the branches and leaves. Mother Savitri also resides in the banyan tree. It was on the leaf of the Akshaya banyan tree that Lord Krishna had appeared to sage Markandeya during the doomsday. This renewable banyan tree is located near Venimadhav on the banks of the Ganges in Prayag. Banyan tree is worshiped for longevity, unbroken good fortune, renewable progress etc.
On the day of Trayodashi, women with good fortune should start this fast by taking a resolution of three days fast. The resolution mantra is as follows:
Mam Vaidhvyadiskaldoshpariharartham Brahma-Savitri-Prityartham Satyavatsavitripriityartham Cha Vat-Savitrivratamah Karishye.
If there is no ability to fast for three days, then on Trayodashi a Bhukta fast, on Chaturdashi a non-obligatory fast and on Amavasya fast should be observed.
Take two baskets of bamboo on the new moon day. Fill them with seven grains (wheat, barley, rice, sesame, kangni, shiamak, devdhanya). Install Brahma and Savitri on one of them and Satyavan and Savitri in the other basket. If you do not have their idols, then clay idols can be made. Sitting under the banyan tree, first worship Brahma-Savitri, then Satyavan and Savitri. Offer good luck items (kajal, henna, vermilion, bangle, bindi, cloth, gold ornaments, mirror etc.) in the worship of Savitri. Now offer Arghya to Mother Savitri with the following mantra:
अवैधव्यं च सौभाग्यं देहि त्वं मम सुव्रते।
पुत्रान् पौत्रांश्च सौख्यं च गृहाणार्घ्यं नमोऽस्तु ते।।
After that worship the banyan tree. After worshiping the banyan tree, offer water to its roots with the following prayer:
वट सिञ्चामि ते मूलं सलिलैरमृतोपमैः।
यथा शाखाप्रशाखाभिर्वृद्धोऽसि त्वं महीतले।।
तथा पुत्रैश्च पौत्रैश्च सम्पन्नं कुरु मां सदा।।
Now circumambulate the banyan tree while chanting the following mantra:
नमो वैवस्वताय।
While circumambulating, wrap raw yarn on the trunk of the banyan tree. There is a law of 108 circumambulation, but it must be done at least seven times. In the end, the story of Vatsavitri fast should be heard.
Vat Savitri Vrat Katha
Madra country was once ruled by a king named Ashwapati. The king was very kind and religious, but he had no children. With the advice of astrologers, he performed a yagya to get a child. He got a girl child from the glory of that yagya. She was named Savitri. At the age of marriage, Savitri chose Satyavan as her bridegroom. When Narad ji came to know about this, he told Savitri's father Ashwapati that "Satyavan is a short-lived person, so Savitri should choose another groom." Ashwapati tried to convince Savitri, but Savitri remained firm on her insistence that Hindu women choose a man only once as a groom, not repeatedly, so on Savitri's insistence, Ashwapati married her to Satyavan. Done with
Satyavan lived in the forest with his blind parents. His father's name was Dyumatsen. His kingdom had been snatched away. Savitri also started living with them and started serving her husband and mother-in-law and father-in-law. When the time of Satyavan's death, told by Narad ji, started coming, Savitri started fasting. Savitri kept a fast on the date Naradji told Satyavan would die, and when Satyavan started going to the forest to cut wood, Savitri also went with him. Satyavan's head began to ache in the forest, so he lay down with his head on Savitri's lap. After some time, Savitri saw that Yamraj had arrived with many Yamdoots. After a while, they took Satyavan's soul and went towards the south.
Savitri also followed Yamraj. Seeing her coming, Yamraj said, "O virtuous woman! The wife supports her husband on earth only, till there you have supported her. Now you go back. On this Savitri said that “Wherever my husband will live, I have to live with him only. This is my husband's religion. Yamraj was pleased with this answer of Savitri and he asked Savitri to ask for a boon, Savitri asked for eyesight for her mother-in-law and father-in-law.
Yamraj gave eyesight to Savitri's mother-in-law and father-in-law and said that "Savitri now you should return", but Savitri kept following Yamraj in the same way. Seeing this devotion of Savitri, Yamraj again asked her to ask for a boon. In this boon, Savitri asked for the lost kingdom of her father-in-law. Yamraj gave the lost kingdom to Savitri's father-in-law and asked Savitri to return, but Savitri started following Yamraj following her husband's religion. Seeing Savitri's devotion to her husband, Yamraj asked her to ask for another groom, then Savitri said that "I want to be the mother of Satyavan's hundred sons."
Seeing Savitri's devotion to her husband, Yamraj also gave her this boon and returned her to Satyavan. Savitri now returned to the same banyan tree. Life re-infused into the dead body of Satyavan lying under the banyan tree. In this way, Savitri not only revived her husband by fasting, but also brought back her mother-in-law and father-in-law's eyesight and their lost kingdom. By telling and listening to this story on the day of Vat Savitri Vrat, the good fortune of fortunate women is unbroken and their wishes are fulfilled.
