ज्योतिष विषय में जातक के अनिष्ट ग्रहों के निवारणार्थ तथा भाग्यवृद्धि के लिए रत्न धारण करने का बहुत अधिक महत्त्व है। उपचारात्मक ज्योतिष में यंत्र-मंत्र-तंत्र विधियों के अतिरिक्त रत्नों का भी विशिष्ट वर्णन उल्लिखित है। ग्रहों के अनिष्टकारी प्रभाव को दूर करने के लिए रत्न धारण करने की जो प्रथा ज्योतिष शास्त्र में प्रचलित है, उसके पीछे वैज्ञानिक कारण भी है। यह बात सभी जानते हैं कि सौरमण्डलीय किरणों का प्रभाव पत्थरों के रूप-रंग, आकार-प्रकार पर पड़ता है। यदि समगुण वाली रश्मियों के ग्रहों से पुष्ट और संचालित व्यक्ति को वैसे ही रश्मियों के वातावरण में उत्पन्न रत्न पहनाया जाए, तो वह बहुत ही अनुकूल फल देने वाला होता है। इसके विपरीत रत्न धारण करने से जातक को जीवन में कई प्रकार की हानि की आशंकाएँ बन सकती हैं।
हमारे प्राचीन ज्योर्तिविदों ने विभिन्न रत्नों को उनके प्रभावानुसार राशिचक्र तथा ग्रहों से जोड़ दिया था, अत: जातक की जन्मकालीन राशि एवं ग्रहों की स्थिति अनुसार रत्न धारण कर भाग्योदय एवं अनिष्ट निवारण की ज्योतिषीय विधा बहुत ही लोकोपयोगी है। हालाँकि ज्योतिषीय ग्रन्थों में रत्नों के अतिरिक्त मन्त्र एवं स्तोत्रों द्वारा भी समय को अनुकूल करने का विधान दिया गया है, लेकिन ये तभी सफल होते हैं, जबकि जातक स्वयं इनका पाठ करे, लेकिन इस प्रतिस्पर्द्धा वाले वर्तमान समय में बहुत कम जातकों को इतना समय मिल पाता है कि वे स्वयं इन मंत्रों एवं स्तोत्रों का पाठ कर सके। इस कारण भी से रत्न धारण की प्रथा को वर्तमान समय में और अधिक बढ़ावा मिल गया है।
ज्योतिष शास्त्र में जातक को अनुकूल रत्न धारण करवाने की कई विधाएँ प्रचलित हैं। इन विधाओं में जन्मपत्रिका के आधार पर अनुकूल रत्न धारण करना सबसे उचित है। जन्मपत्री द्वारा फलादेश ज्ञान बहुत ही विस्तृत है, अत: जन्मपत्री से सम्बन्धित फलों में लग्न कुण्डली, जन्मदशा, अष्टकवर्ग, गोचर तथा वर्षकुण्डली का विचार करते हुए यदि जातक को कोई अनुकूल रत्न धारण करवाया जाए, तो वह रत्न जातक के जीवन की दिशा ही परिवर्तित कर देगा। वह रत्न जातक को श्रेष्ठ फल प्रदान कर समय को उसके अनुकूल बनाएगा। इन पाँच परिस्थितियों से निर्णय करके रत्न पहनना हालांकि मुश्किल है, लेकिन प्रस्तुत लेख में ऐसे सरल नियम बताए गए हैं, जिन्हें आप आसानी से समझकर अपने अनुकूल रत्न को धारण कर सकते हैं। 
जन्मकुण्डली और रत्न चयन
अब सर्वप्रथम लग्न कुण्डली के आधार पर रत्नचयन का विचार करते हैं। जन्मपत्री के द्वादश भावों में केन्द्र (1, 4, 7, 10) तथा त्रिकोण (1, 5, 9) भावों को शुभ फलकारक तथा त्रिक (6, 8, 12) भावों को अशुभ फलकारक माना जाता है।
इन शुभ भावों में भी त्रिकोण भावों का विशेष महत्त्व है और सर्वाधिक रूप से लग्न का, क्योंकि लग्न की त्रिकोण एवं केन्द्र संज्ञा होने के कारण विशेष महत्ता है। यह मत बिल्कुल सत्य है, लेकिन कई स्थितियों में त्रिकोणेश का रत्न धारण करने पर भी जीवन में किसी प्रकार की उन्नति प्राप्त नहीं होती है। इसका कारण यह है कि कई बार त्रिकोणेश ग्रह त्रिक भावों में स्थित होते हैं या पाप ग्रहों के मध्य आकर असरहीन हो जाते हैं। ऐसी स्थिति में उन भावों के स्वामी ग्रहों का रत्न धारण करने से हानि होने की संभावनाएँ ही बनती हैं; जैसे चन्द्रमा भाग्येश या पंचमेश होकर क्षीण (अमावस्या तिथि के निकट) या नीच राशि (वृश्चिक राशि के प्रारंभिक चरण) में होता हुआ पापकर्त्तरि योग (पापग्रहों के मध्य) अथवा केमद्रुम योग बनाता हुआ त्रिक भावों में स्थित है। ऐसी स्थिति में मोती रत्न (चन्द्रमा का रत्न) धारण करने से जातक को हानि ही होगी। इसी प्रकार त्रिकेश ग्रह भी त्रिकोण भाव में स्थित होने पर अपना अशुभ फल त्याग देते हैं।
दशा-महादशा और रत्न चयन
रत्न धारण करवाने का निर्णय सिर्फ लग्न कुण्डली के आधार पर ही नहीं करना चाहिए। दशाएँ भी रत्न धारण के निर्णय में महती भूमिका निभाती है, त्रिकेश ग्रह चाहे त्रिकोण भावों में आकर कितना ही श्रेष्ठ फलकारक क्यों न हो, उससे संबंधित रत्न उसी ग्रह की दशा में धारण नहीं करना चाहिए। इसी प्रकार त्रिकोणेश यदि उपर्युक्त दोषों से पीड़ित हो गए हों, तो इन ग्रहों की दशाओं में भी तत्सम्बन्धी रत्न धारण नहीं करना चाहिए।
अब प्रश्न उठता है कि कुण्डली में भावों तथा दशाओं के आधार पर किन रत्नों को धारण करना चाहिए, तो उसका निर्णय यह है कि लग्नेश, तृतीयेश, चतुर्थेश, पंचमेश, नवमेश, दशमेश तथा लाभेश ग्रह जिसकी दशा चल रही हो तथा उस ग्रह पर त्रिक स्थानदोष, पाप ग्रह मध्य दोष, वक्री दोष आदि न हों, तो उसका रत्न धारण कर लेने से जातक की जीवन में उन्नति होती है। 
मंगल, बुध, गुरु, शुक्र और शनि ग्रहों की दो-दो राशियाँ होती हैं। कई स्थितियों में ये ग्रह त्रिकोणेश तथा त्रिकेश दोनों ही भावों के स्वामी हो जाते हैं। त्रिकेश (6, 8, 12) भावों के स्वामी होकर यदि ये पंचताराग्रह अन्य शुभ भावों के स्वामी हो जाएँ, तो रत्न धारण का निर्णय करने के लिए उनकी प्रिय या मूल त्रिकोण राशि एवं दृष्टि सम्बन्ध को आधार बनाना चाहिए।
ज्योतिष में पंचतारा ग्रहों की प्रिय राशियों का वर्णन है, जैसे मंगल की मेष, बुध की कन्या, शुक्र की तुला, गुरु की धनु तथा शनि की कुंभ। ये राशियाँ इन ग्रहों की मूल त्रिकोण राशियाँ भी हैं।
इस आधार पर किसी जन्मपत्रिका में ये राशियाँ त्रिक भावों में स्थित न हों तथा इन पंचतारा ग्रहों का भी अपनी मूलत्रिकोण राशियों से किसी भी प्रकार का संबंध बनता हो, तो इन ग्रहों से संबंधित रत्नों को धारण किया जा सकता है। जैसे मिथुन लग्न में शनि अष्टमेश तथा नवमेश होता है। इस स्थिति में शनि यदि नवम भाव में स्थित हो या इस भाव से किसी भी प्रकार का संबंध बनाता हो, तो ऐसा जातक शनि की दशा आने पर नीलम या अन्य शनि रत्न धारण कर सकता है।
अष्टकवर्ग और रत्न चयन
सर्वाष्टक वर्ग में जिस भाव को 30 से अधिक रेखाएँ प्राप्त होती हों, लेकिन वह त्रिक (6, 8, 12) या मारक (2, 7) भाव न हो, तो जातक को उस भाव के स्वामी ग्रह का रत्न धारण करने से जीवन में अपार सफलताएँ प्राप्त होती हैं। अष्टकवर्ग के आधार पर जो बली ग्रह होता है, यदि उसकी दशा ही जातक को चल रही हो, तो उस ग्रह का रत्न धारण करने से जातक के जीवन की दिशा ही परिवर्तित हो जाती है। वह रत्न उसे सफलता की ऊँचाइयों पर ले जाकर सर्वश्रेष्ठ सिद्ध करता है।
गोचर और रत्न चयन
नवग्रहों में सूर्य, चन्द्र, बुध तथा शुक्र का गोचर बहुत ही अल्पकाल के लिए आता है। अन्य ग्रहों में मंगल का गोचर डेढ़ माह, गुरु का गोचर 13 माह, शनि का गोचर ढाई वर्ष तथा राहु-केतु का गोचर डेढ़ वर्ष एक राशि में होता है, अत: गोचरीय आधार पर मंगल, गुरु, शनि तथा राहु-केतु का रत्न धारण करवाने का नियम ही प्रयोग में देखा गया है।
जातक की जन्मपत्रिका के आधार पर इन ग्रहों में सबसे शुभ गोचर जिस ग्रह का हो, उससे संबंधित रत्न को धारण करने से जातक के जीवन में उन्नति होती है। उपर्युक्त अनुकूल ग्रह यदि जन्मपत्री में त्रिकेश या मारकेश हों, लेकिन त्रिकोणादि शुभ स्थानों में स्थित हों तथा षड्वर्ग में भी श्रेष्ठ हों, तो उसका रत्न गोचरीय आधार पर धारण किया जा सकता है, परन्तु इसमें एक बात का ध्यान रखें कि रत्न धारण करते समय उसकी दशाएँ नहीं होनी चाहिए। यदि उस ग्रह की दशा चलते हुए आपने त्रिकेश या मारकेश का रत्न धारण किया, तो यह आपके स्वास्थ्य के लिए अनुकूल नहीं होगा।
वर्ष कुण्डली और रत्न चयन
अब वर्ष कुण्डली के आधार पर शुभ रत्न धारण करने का निर्धारण करते हैं। जन्मपत्री के योगकारी ग्रह ही वर्ष कुण्डली में योगकारी हो जाएँ, तो यह बहुत ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ योग है। ऐसी स्थिति में उक्त ग्रह का रत्न धारण करने से जातक की भाग्योन्नति होती है। जन्मपत्रिका में त्रिकेश तथा मारक ग्रह यदि वर्ष कुण्डली में त्रिकोणेश आदि होकर योगकारी हो जाए, तो उसका रत्न भी उसी स्थिति में धारण किया जा सकता है, जबकि वह त्रिकोणादि शुभ भावों में स्थित हो, शुभ ग्रहों से युति करते हों तथा उनकी वर्तमान समय में दशा नहीं चल रही हो, ऐसे योग में वर्ष कुण्डली के योगकारी ग्रहों का रत्न धारण करने से वह वर्ष जातक के लिए श्रेष्ठ फलदायी होता है।
शुभ गोचरीय ग्रह के रत्न को उसके अग्रिम राशि प्रवेश तक तथा वर्ष कुण्डली के आधार पर निर्धारित रत्न अग्रिम वर्ष प्रवेश तक धारण किए जा सकते हैं। इसी प्रकार दशाओं के आधार पर चयनित रत्नों को धारण करना चाहिए, लेकिन कुण्डली के आधार पर सर्वाधिक योगकारी ग्रह तथा त्रिकोणेश यदि बली होकर शुभ स्थानों में स्थित हों, तो उसके स्वामी ग्रहों के रत्न जातक जीवनपर्यन्त धारण कर सकता है।
