18 दिसम्बर, 2022 दोहा के लुसैल स्टेडियम में लगभग 89 हजार दर्शकों के साथ करोड़ों टीवी दर्शकों की साँसें फीफा वर्ल्डकप मैच की गति के साथ-साथ ऊपर-नीचे हो रही थीं। यह रोचक मुकाबला अतिरिक्त समय और उसके बाद पेनल्टी शूट तक पहुँचा, जिसमें लियोनेल मेसी के नेतृत्व में अर्जेंटीना ने ऐतिहासिक जीत अर्जित की। इसके साथ ही मेसी का वर्ल्डकप जीतने का सपना पूरा हुआ। अर्जेंटीना ने यह खिताब तीसरी बार जीता है, परन्तु डियागो मैराडोना की टीम द्वारा 1986 में जीते गए वर्ल्ड कप के 36 वर्ष बाद अर्जेंटीना यह उपलब्धि अर्जित कर पाया है। यह मेसी का वर्ल्डकप रहा है। इसमें उन्होंने अर्जेंटीना के लिए 7 गोल किए और 3 गोल असिस्ट किए। वर्ल्ड कप में यह उनका सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन है। यह कहना अतिशयोक्ति नहीं है कि फीफा वर्ल्डकप-2022 का विजेता अर्जेन्टीना नहीं वरन् लियोनेल मेसी हैं। इस वर्ल्डकप में कप्तान के रूप में और व्यक्तिगत खिलाड़ी के रूप में मेसी का प्रदर्शन अभूतपूर्व रहा है। वे सन् 2006 से वर्ल्ड कप खेल रहे हैं। 
लियोनेल मेसी को विश्‍व के श्रेष्ठतम फुटबाल खिलाड़ियों में माना जाता है। उन्होंने रिकॉर्ड सात बार ‘बेलन डी-ओर’ (गोल्डन बॉल) पुरस्कार, रिकॉर्ड छह बार ‘यूरोपीयन गोल्डन शूज’ पुरस्कार तथा सन् 2020 में ‘बेलेन डी-ओर ड्रीम टीम’ के लिए नामित हुए हैं। जुलाई, 2021 में प्रतिष्ठित कोपा कप 27 साल बाद जीता। 2008 में बीजिंग ओलम्पिक में गोल्ड मेडल जीतने वाली अर्जेन्टीना टीम के वे सदस्य रहे।
मेसी का जन्म 24 जून, 1987 को रोजारियो (अर्जेंटीना) में हुआ था। वे अपने पिता जॉर्ज मेसी और माता सेलिया की तीसरी सन्तान थे। पिता एक स्टील फैक्ट्री में मैनेजर थे। परिवार में फुटबॉल का माहौल था। दोनों बड़े भाई, चचेरे भाई आदि फुटबॉल खेला करते थे और वे भी प्रोफेशनल खिलाड़ी बने। 4 साल की उम्र में ही वे बच्चों के क्लब से जुड़ गए और उनकी फुटबॉल की कोचिंग आरम्भ हो गई, परन्तु 10 वर्ष की अवस्था में हार्मोन डेफिसियेंसी से भी पीड़ित हुए, जिसके इलाज में उनके फुटबॉल खेल ने ही सहायता की और इसी कौशल से क्लब उनके इलाज के खर्चे को भी उठाने लगे। 14 वर्ष की आयु में हार्मोन डेफिसियेंसी से मुक्त होकर मेसी नियमित रूप से फुटबॉल लेखने लगे। 2002-03 के सत्र में उन्होंने सर्वाधिक गोल किए। इसके बाद मेसी ने पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखा। वे बार्सिलोना क्लब तथा अर्जेंटीना के सबसे अधिक गोल करने वाले खिलाड़ी हैं। एक ओर जहाँ बार्सिलोना के लिए उन्होंने अपनी कप्तानी में कई टूर्नामेंट जिताए हैं, परन्तु अपने देश के लिए अपनी कप्तानी में कोई बड़ा टूर्नामेंट नहीं जिताया। 2022 में विश्वकप तथा 2021 में कोपा कप जिताकर वह कमी भी पूरी कर दी। मेसी न केवल अर्जेंटीना के वरन् विश्‍व के महान् खिलाड़ियों में से एक माने जाते हैं। मैराडोना ने उन्हें अपना उत्तराधिकारी कहा था।
